Recently—on July 10—support for PHP 5.5 ended, and the changes currently being prepared will be made only for versions 5.6 and 7.0.
This means that many websites using older WordPress versions won’t be properly secured or supported.
According to wordpress.org on its website, over 80% of websites using this popular CMS run older PHP versions.
For people who manage hosting for their site, we recommend switching the interpreter to supported versions—PHP 5.6 or 7.0. Such a change should be available from the hosting admin panel.
Hosting companies should also make sure to remove old PHP versions from their servers.
The same statistics also show that only 23% of sites use the latest MySQL versions—5.7, 10.0, and 10.1.
